Intuitive Interviews: Tarot Teasers #4

At The Green Man, our psychic readers are professionals.  They do readings A LOT.  But I was curious to see if one reading in each career so far has stood out as being the funniest, most right-on-the-money, most illuminating, etc.  Best reaction ever gotten?  Funniest reaction?  Let’s see what Shana, Heather, Kristin, Jill, Hovik, Ashley, and Vanina have to say.

Shana says:
I’ve had clients that laugh through the whole reading.  A lot of times they walk away with good catch phrases or funny not-so-nice nicknames for their exes. The one that stands out to me was: I gave the girl solid, mundane, real world advice on how to fix a sticky situation. She texted me later that week and said, “Oh my god it worked! I thought you were gonna be weird and tell me to run crystals on myself or something!”  Note: I did tell her to carry a lodestone and pyrite with her, and she still does to this day.

Heather says:

I’ve had a few but one I remember was when a woman came in and I laid the cards out and I was hesitant at first but just asked if she was pregnant and if it bothered a friend of hers that she got pregnant.  She said, “Yes I just took a pregnancy test before I came here and I brought my friend with me, and I wanted to confirm the pregnancy but I am afraid she’ll be upset because she has been trying for so long to get pregnant.  And now I have to tell her.”  That’s just one and there are many, but for some reason that always stands out for me and reassures me that my cards are magical.

Kristin says:
I just say what I see, hear, and feel without much prior context. One reading I remember as humorous was a man who was juggling two lovers, and the tarot cards clearly spelled it out. I did not hesitate and honestly told him what I saw, even though I knew he might be upset. He laughed and said “Wow, I was not expecting that. You are right. You are right.” Most people that are return clients have a reason to come back to me and it’s great to hear them tell me that my advice helped them. The best reactions are hugs. A heartfelt hug really is a reaction I treasure every time.
Jill says:
(Jill does short crystal readings, not Tarot, but we decided she could chime in.)  😉
The crystal showed me a toilet, like a throne, on a hill.  Kinda weird, but that’s what it was.  And I knew that what I was going to say was a bit harsh, but that’s what the crystal was telling me.  “Your goals are crap!”  Luckily, the customer took the reading without being offended.  A few years later she came in and told me that it all made sense: she had been chasing after a man who was no good for her, and once she stopped, she realized what the reading meant.
Hovik says:
Wow yes, we all do a lot of readings! I have several stories of amazing readings that I’ve done since I have started. The two most recent involve infidelity…
So the first story: I was hanging out downstairs in the store just people watching and waiting. A few regular customers came and we exchanged hellos while they explored. I happened to be drawn to a cluster of pyrite sitting in the case so I walked over to it and picked it up. This little guy was very chatty and sure had a few things to say.; one of which was that one of the girls who just came in was being cheated on by her boyfriend. I was taken aback and put the rock on the counter and walked away for a second. I sat and thought about what it said and wrestled with saying something like that. It’s not exactly a cute little psychic parlour game now was it? One of the girls walked over as I was thinking and grabbed the pyrite. When she did, I knew then and there I had to say something. The stone called to her and I needed to relay the message. So I walked over to the counter and whispered to them both, so which one of you has a boyfriend. The one who I felt the message was for answered back, “Why do you ask?” At that point, I figured may as well just spit it out so I did. I looked her in the eye and said, “Well, you see that pyrite you are holding?” “it told me that your boyfriend is cheating on you.” Immediately her shoulders slouched and she looked and me and said, “God damnit! I knew it.” I nervously laughed and said, “Well, I guess you gotta buy him now don’t you?”
The second story is very similar, but with more of a “stage magic” type of feel to it. A woman came in and she was purchasing some stuff. She started talking to me about her boyfriend and wanted to know what was going on with things. I pulled out my playing cards which I use for my readings on occasion and laid the cards out. Plain and clear the cards showed me he was cheating on her and the relationship would be over in three months. I felt rather strongly about it and as I was telling her, I felt the urge to jot down this event and mark it somewhere. So in true stage magician fashion I grabbed a pen and paper and wrote my prediction down and had two customers sign and witness. I taped it to the exact date I predicted and told her to come back and let me know what happened. The three months past and the day approached. I hadn’t seen her so I was getting curious as to what happened. She ended up coming in the first of the week and I remembered her so I walked over to the calendar hanging on the wall and grabbed my note. I walked back to her and said, “Well, was I right?” She looked at me red faced and said yes. At first she wasn’t sure if I actually got the date right, but after a few minutes she gasped and ran back to me and said, “Oh my god! You were exactly right!” She explained how the thought crossed her mind and we both laughed.

Ashley says (with names changed to protect the guilty):

One chart reading that was especially memorable for a literal translation of the message was for a client whom I told that her biggest rival is someone who has their moon in Capricorn – specifically in the Nakshatra of Uttara Ashadha, which is an asterism signified by a [insert unusual animal name here]. She was stunned – as she mentioned that her nickname for an ex was [the same unusual animal name], whom she had contact with for the first time in a long time, just prior to our reading.

Another example: I was doing a phone reading with a client I have never met in-person, therefore, I don’t know what she looks like. I did a 10-card spread with the near future being the strength card and the 6 of wands being the outcome for answering her relationship question. From the Strength and 6 of wands, I saw in the cards that she would be changing her hair, which would give her a lot more attention than she was used to getting. She was astonished by this message, and replied that she had just gotten half her head shaved in a radical new hair cut she had found the courage to try as an artistic expression of her femininity.

Another example of an uncanny relatable message was when I met a friend of a client for an impromptu reading in the lobby of a hotel. I was asked if her ex would come back and I was giving her all the information I was getting. For some reason, I heard the words, “baby king” in my mind and decided to go with it. When I uttered this phrase, she interrupted me and said, “omg! we call him the ‘little prince’!” Okay.. no cigar, but close enough. She said she was “weirded out” by it. Strange things have happened in this business….

Vanina says:

I remember one, when someone came to see me and she was trying to test me?? Hmm? Didn’t ask me questions, she just stared without agreeing or disagreeing, which was a bit uncomfortable, but oh well…I owned it and gave her all the information the cards had: the good, the bad & the ugly.  (Because sugar coating is not my style, or should I say homie don’t play that!) lolol. Kinda felt like I was talking to myself. When I was done, I just closed my eyes waiting for a _________👈 Insert here 👈response👈and she said : everything you just said was right on, you even answered the questions I had. How can you possibly know all the  details?  (Then the “I must be psychic jokes”started from both of us.) Now she’s my regular.

Intuitive Interviews/Tarot Teasers Episode 3

getting started with Tarot decks

In today’s Intuitive Interviews we ask our practitioners about getting started with Tarot

Some readers seem to have been born with a Tarot deck in hand.  Others discovered Tarot after using other divination tools.  What’s the Tarot history of each Green Man psychic reader?  Did you see a friend using a deck?  Did someone give you a reading and you thought, “Cool!  I want to do that!”  Did it come to you in a book, or a random walk-by in a store, or a vision?

Stephanie says:
Before I knew the “Tarot de Marseille” even existed I was guided (by a spirit being) to find the only metaphysical store in town to purchase a book teaching the meaning of cards from a regular deck of playing cards. As a teenager I was very happy with this find since a small book is all I could afford, knowing we already had a couple of playing decks at home.  I was very grateful for the guidance I received from this guide who stayed by my side for quite a long time. Her name was Chloe.

Heather says:

I had readings by someone who used the playing deck, and she was pretty accurate.  At that time I was not reading for the public, but I always was attracted to this practice, and always had a so-called sixth sense.  People would come to me for advice at a very young age; I always just “knew.”

Branden says:
I started reading with a set of playing cards–a deck of playing cards appeared where usually there are none. I opened the deck and suddenly felt this odd sensation running across my body. As I flipped the cards over I felt meanings come across me, very much like a light bulb came on over my head in an ‘ah-ha’ moment.
Hovik says:
When I was younger I didn’t spend much time playing with tarot or divination. My great grandmother was an excellent card reader and she predicted a lot of things over the years. My grandmother, my mom and her sister would always beg her to teach her the ways of card reading. She always would look at them and say, “No, this is not for you, this is the devils work and you aren’t supposed to play here.” I grew up talking to spirits and so my method of early divination was having conversations with my childhood spirit guides. I didn’t pick up an actual tarot until much later when I began to realize the cards made it a little easier and also people related better and connected to them more than just me sitting and chatting with them about things while I looked around the room talking to my spirits as well. So no, I personally didn’t grow up with a tarot deck in my hand, I walked into that later. Surprisingly enough, when I picked up playing cards to start I connected with my great grandmother who had passed away early in my life and she and I had spirit conversations and she taught me the meaning of the cards. I was the one she was waiting for to teach and as tradition held, I learned from my elder and not with a deck in hand.

Intuitive Interview/Tarot Teasers: First in a series!

wheel of fortune tarot card
Welcome to the first in a series of posts about tarot, intuition, etc.  In this series I pose the same question to our Green Man readers and see who responds.  Today we hear from Marjorie, Vanina, Jason, Branden, Shana, Elysia, and…wait for it…Griffin!  Hope you enjoy this series.

“They” (whoever “they” are) say that it’s bad luck to buy your own Tarot deck.  I know LOTS of Tarot enthusiasts who own many decks (one friend of mine has at least 30), and I’m pretty sure they didn’t get them all as gifts.  Where did this “rule” come from?  And what do the psychic readers at The Green Man think about it?

Marjorie says:
I’m not sure where the rule came from.  But, I recall reading it in one of the first tarot books I picked up.  I knew right from the start that was a rule I was going to break.  I didn’t know too many people who knew anything about tarot.  The only way for me to get a deck was to buy one.

There is a wide range of tarot decks created by so many different artists.  Tarot has transformed with different artistic expressions.  Because of this there’s more of appeal in finding a deck that speaks to you.  I’d rather find a deck that I can work with than wait for a deck to be given to me.  I honestly don’t know anyone who has waited for a deck to be gifted.

Vanina says:
I’m not really sure about the rule, I might have heard that one here and there. I think of it more of a superstition like “certain days are better for readings than others,” etc.  Just as there is a bit of truth here and there, it doesn’t really apply to me.  I don’t see it as bad luck at all.  If a deck connects with you, buy it, if someone gives it to you it’s good too. 🙂  I buy some, and some are gifts, and when they are done I toss them out, give them away or trade for a new one.

My first few Tarot decks were gifts, and that opened the door for me.  I mostly read from the Wizards Tarot deck for querents, and my first deck was a gift.  But after years of reading, I’m on my third deck and I have bought those for myself.  I think I’m due for a fourth.  If an opportunity arises to purchase a deck that speaks to you, I say “Go for it!” Spirit will not hold it against you.

“Does a tarot deck have to be gifted?”  In my school of thought, no.  Are there benefits to receiving a deck?  Yes. Let me share some of my insight….
I believe it does not matter whether you buy or are gifted your first deck.  The cards will work so long as you have knowledge and/or a natural gift.
Traditionally, though, cards were passed from teacher to student as a sign that student was ready to go in to the world.
In modern times we see family/friends gifting the practitioner with decks for birthdays, holiday celebrations, etc.  This equates as a sign of love, acting as an activator to ‘awaken’ the deck for the reader.  We still see times when a well-used deck is passed from person to person; this would be an act of passing knowledge from one practitioner to another.  It is up to the new reader to unlock secrets shared between old reader and deck.
Personally, I gift decks to new readers when they begin their journey down that rabbit hole as I personally follow older traditions.  Setting up with a little ritual to awake the deck each deck gifted.  Giving it life and blessings from my training to their new journey.

Shana says:
I’ve heard that saying about buying Tarot cards many times but can’t honestly say that I know where this comes from.  I personally don’t think that how the cards are obtained matters (as long as they are obtained ethically of course.)  The most important part of buying/getting a deck is to make sure that it is a deck that speaks to you.  A lot of artists put their own twist in the cards and therefore they can convey a slightly different message.  This energy is what you connect to, and it will help make your readings more accurate and smooth.  So don’t worry too much about how you GET the deck, worry about how you CONNECT with the deck!

Elysia says:
In regards to whether or not you should be gifted a Tarot deck, I have mainly heard this “rule” in reference to your first tarot deck, not all the decks you choose thereafter. Though I tried to look up where this original wives tale came from, I was unable to unearth concrete reference to where the “Rule” was initiated.  My feeling is that this may have been a coming of age thing originally, with the deck passed down from one generation or a tribe member to one they felt were ready or even showed signs of having gifts in that area–a person who could be molded and further taught in the tribe’s/community’s beliefs or systems, “rules” even, to assist them further with their readings with the cards.

Personally, I’m on the fence about this in many ways.  When it’s a good time, the right deck really does have a tendency to show up, or have you stumble across it.  If it is not the right time, most readings just seem…well…off.  Classes may help, but as a teacher I’ve seen more than one individual find out partway into the series that they need a different deck, or even a combined deck.  (One of my personal set ups is a combination of two different decks.)  Either way, Tarot is a tool of divination.  Finding the best way to make the information “flow” is often a little bit of personal growth, mixed in with trust in what you are seeing, and of course at least a touch of intuition.

Griffin says:
In answer to your question, I think that’s a load of rubbish!  “You have to be gifted your Tarot Deck”, what nonsense!  Now I have heard over the years that some folks say your Magical Tools should be passed to you from another and I would have to say that I have received a couple of mine that did seem to come to me in a magical way that felt like Spirit had its hand all over it.   But I have never sat around waiting for such things to happen.  And though on rare occasion something special does find its way to you via someone else, that shouldn’t become the rule!  And ALL magical tools aside, your Tarot Deck?  Nope, of all tools your Tarot Deck is one that you should find and choose for yourself!
A Tarot Deck is a visual language tool to perceive the qualities of spirit associated with a particular person or issue within the context of a particular time and space.  The visual imagery should speak to you and provoke insight and creativity within you.  The deck works as a key to crack open your ability as the mediator of spirit.  It needs to be just right for you, not someone else!  The last thing I would want is a deck that someone else chose, with appropriate imagery for them… that they found stimulating.  It’s too close to other people speaking for me or telling me how to think, neither sits well with me!
Some folks have many decks, as each comes with its own personality and voice.  In such a case each deck would find its own special place and application within your world.  And as to inheriting a second hand deck unless it’s just for sentimental reasons, or to add to a collection, well, tired old floppy cards are just not so magical to me!
Where this may have come from?  Maybe the publishers thought it might increase sales if they pushed their special cards as the perfect gift for that truly special someone?  And all the more special if gifted to them!

How do I choose a reader? And then what happens?
