Ceremonialism for Witches Introductory Zoom class with Joe Futerman
Ceremonialism or Ceremonial Magic either conjures up pictures of robed orders in deep crypts doing dreadful sacrifices to lost gods, or leather-patched, be-spectacled gentlemen sipping brandy while poring over ancient tomes with never an intention of leaving the library. And, in fact, both images have about them some truth and also some comfortable fiction. In this introductory course, Ceremonialism for Witches, we will explore the underlying cosmology and practice of the most influential ceremonial magical orders: The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The course will begin with the formation myth of the order and how its Kabbalistically-derived path of initiation tied together the Tree of Life, the standard form of the Rider Waite Tarot, and the alchemical derivation of the 4 elements, along with the inclusion of certain Eastern notions like the ascended masters, karma, and reincarnation. In this process we will introduce the idea of the Tree of Life as both pattern of creation and cosmic filing cabinet. We will also examine the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram and understand how it became the essential form of the Wiccan Circle and set contemporary standards for circles and banishing in Modern and Post-Modern Wiccan Craft. Finally, we will sum up how the morals and dogma of this Victorian order have affected the ideas of Black, White, and Grey magic and have tied contemporary Wicca into the Bi-Theonic system of only the Great Goddess and the Horned One.
