Everything you might want to know about Moldavite
MOLDAVITE!
People are saying “it’s the most powerful crystal on earth.” (I have an image of clear quartz saying “Hold my beer….”)
It is a powerful stone. Some people find it too energetic to deal with at all. Others love the vibrations, and drape themselves in it. As it a combination of heavenly and earthly energies, it can be used to kick up your vision into other realms. Combined with a double-terminated quartz and focused through a rose quartz, it can amp up healing energy.

Facts about Moldavite
Moldavite is immensely popular right now, due in large part to Tik Tok videos. Here are some facts:
Moldavite is found ONLY in the Moldau River area of the Czech Republic. It is the result of a meteorite colliding with the earth on the river banks (possibly actually in Germany and strewn by the impact to Czechoslovakia) millions of years ago. It is green, ranging from light to olive to deep. IT WILL HAVE INCLUSIONS (air bubbles, sand, dirt, organic material, etc.). Very small pieces, polished and faceted for jewelry, might not show many inclusions, depending on the quality of the original stone and the skill of the cutter. If you have a big piece of “Moldavite” that is perfectly clear, with no striations or inclusions, it’s probably fake, unless it cost you the equivalent of a car payment. For a really nice car. This stuff is not cheap.
How can you tell if Moldavite is real?
Unfortunately, this is getting harder to do, since tons of fake Moldavite is being manufactured in and sent from Asia, and is being sold in America, Europe, and everywhere else. Real Moldavite should have a Certificate of Authenticity (or at least the wholesaler should be able to show the retailer one). So guess what the latest scam is? Right! Fake certificates of authenticity. By the way, there is no such thing as White Moldavite, or African Moldavite, or Black Moldavite. Those things are calcite (white) or tektites. Moldavite is a tektite, but not all tektites are Moldavite.
One way to tell if Moldavite is real is to look for striations and inclusions. These will vary, depending on where along the river the stones were dug up, the amount of rain in that locale, etc. Experts (of which I am not one) can tell the major locales by looking at the stones and seeing the structure, inclusions, debris, shape, amount of air bubbles, etc.
Fake Moldavite often looks smooth and bubbly. Sometimes the fake pieces have seams! Yeahhhhno. Smaller pieces that seem to be too uniform in shape can also be suspect; they’ve been made in molds, so there will be repeats in shapes. With real Moldavite that wouldn’t happen. Each piece is different—like snowflakes.
Fake Moldavite (aka glass) will shatter more easily than genuine Moldavite. Pieces 4 grams and larger, and especially 10 grams and larger, for “too good to be true” prices, will be just that: not true. The bigger molds make it more cost-effective for the counterfeiters to make glass fakes. And now that Moldavite has become so popular, smaller fake pieces are starting to show up.
Another way to feel confident about your Moldavite is to buy it from a retailer you trust. The Green Man gets Moldavite only from one source, a gentleman named Frank with whom we’ve been working for years—since waaaaaay before Moldavite got so popular. We trust him and his sources.
By the way, we also carry Moldavite oil, spray, incense, tea lights, and bath salts, all from that same gentleman. The products have real Moldavite in them.
Laws about Moldavite, and where to get it
Here’s some more Moldavite info from Frank:
Commercial Moldavite mining was prohibited 8 years ago. There is no digging allowed in public areas—you must OWN the land you dig on. You also are prohibited from digging more than a meter deep. That law went into effect 3 years ago, because miners were going out into the woods and digging very deep holes, which would then collapse on them and bury them alive. When a friend realized they hadn’t seen a miner for several days, the friend would have the authorities go out looking…with cadaver dogs. Hence, the meter-deep law.
Moldavite availability is plummeting, so the price keeps rising. There is a finite amount of it, and you can’t dig on anything but your own property. Also, some of the best Moldavite is under two buildings that were built on a strewn field before the Moldavite craze started!
As of April 24, 2021, The Green Man has some pieces of genuine Moldavite, and some pendants. Soon we will have some more pendants! We also have Libyan Desert Glass, an impactite some have likened to Moldavite…but we are finding a much more soothing energy from that. More on that later. Stay well and safe!
