Keys of Magic

By Hovik

Keys are a powerful symbol and tool used by many. Whether it be for a mundane or a spiritual one, they are important in unlocking doors to what would otherwise be inaccessible. Just as a mundane key is needed to gain access to a room or space, the same is true for a key used in magic. I wear an old skeleton key around my neck for just such purpose. I work with several gatekeeper spirits and through them and my key, I have access to the spirit world. Now, I want to say one other thing before I get any further; a key is not necessary in connecting with spirits. External items used within your spiritual practice are merely tools to make the magic more easily accessible to you. In my line of work, I do a lot of spirit communication both for customers and also private clients who come to see me for a reading. My key is helpful because I can use it to tap into other folks and their guides. It acts as a spiritual hall pass if you will. Spirits aren’t just going to start talking to you and answering your questions about the person they are attached to without some sort of reason. My key grants permission as is sends my gatekeepers forward and allows me access to the meeting place where my spirits then vouch for me and give me access. I wanted to go into a little bit of detail on how it works when I tap into a person’s spirits because it is a common question I get asked. Rightfully so, I think it is important for people to know a bit about how I work as to give them a little knowledge to make them feel safer. You wouldn’t necessarily allow a doctor to operate on you without first having a chat about how and what exactly he or she is going to do right?

Keys within magic are quite powerful and common. They can be used for a multitude of spells and charms. Keys are protective as they keep out unwanted forces and people. They make us feel safe knowing we have the ability to lock a door and keep people or spirits out. Keys are also great for unlocking secrets and new information. I especially like old iron keys for this as they represent time and the past knowledge of the ancient worlds. The right key can unlock new possibilities for you and help you reach a place that was inaccessible before. Keys can also be used for travel. Say you have a particular destination in mind, why not make a key that unlocks a door where you want to go? It doesn’t have to be a door lock, but even a padlock will work. I have a key that I used recently that has a fleur de lis for a handle to grant me access to New Orleans again. I used the key to help me unlocked any blocked doors that would be in my way. The same idea can be applied to other times when a block is in your way. Name a lock the blockage keeping you from a particular goal and then use a key to open the lock with intention to clear the obstacle. As mentioned before, keys can grant you access to the spirit world as well. If you are having trouble connecting with your spirit guides, try asking the universe or your guides to grant you a key to unlock the door? There are also many spirits who work with the keys as well and having a set of your own can allow you to commune with these spirits better. Hecate is a popular gatekeeper and crossroads goddess many witches work with. She holds the keys in her hands and can use them to allow you access to magic and mystery otherwise hidden from you. Ganesha is another spirit that is very popular for removing obstacles and you can use keys here to connect with him and unlock doors that keep you from success. Janus, the roman god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, and doorways is another spirit that can be called upon using keys. A word of caution here, remember that holding the keys is a great and powerful responsibility. Sometimes folks utilize the keys and end up unlocking doors to things they did not necessarily wish to open. I’m not talking about anything terribly harmful specifically, but keep in mind that spirits tied to keys know all and see all. Unlocking a door is opening a door to a whole other world and it is wise to tread lightly as you may see and experience things that are a little unexpected.
