Vision Quest to Brigid the Divide.

This month’s Vision Quest comes like a perfect storm. I checked the cards on the date and the phase of the Moon and got a clear direction of the power and forces of the tides on this date all pointing towards reconciling the division. It is a powerful time for making peace and bringing closure to the divide.

Also, in the Craft Tradition I work and many others of the Old World, we count the days from the death of a loved one and mark the 40th day. There is a period of 40 days for the spirit to transition from the state of being a living spirit within the living body, to being a living Ancestral Spirit arriving in the afterlife. The crossing of the Death event, seen by some as a river of forgetfulness, takes 40 days. So on the 40th day, we gather to bring closure to our mourning and to celebrate the living Spirit that was and still is, now having transitioned into the Ancestral Realm.

Counting the days since the Orlando Shooting, the exact date of the 40th day lands on our Vision Quest date, July 22nd. So we will also need to incorporate the work of bringing that painful event to a close. And celebrate the Arrival of those dear Ones into the Afterlife. This will likely be an emotional working, so please be prepared.

It seemed appropriate then with all that is going on. We are not 40 days out from the Orlando Shooting and yet have another run of shootings. Our society is reeling, how much more division can we endure?

I look to our own community as a model of how things could be. People of all colours, creeds and cultures, all beliefs and sexual identities, with all our quirks and awkwardness we still find a way to gather under one Tree as a Diverse Tribe, proud of our collective Identity and Intrigued rather than threatened by our internal differences. And yet our community is also not immune to the spirit of division and knee jerk anger. The world is fearful and angry and confused as to where to place these powerful feelings of frustration. I have found myself there feeling hurt and frustrated and poking a bear while knowing it’s a bad time to poke a bear unless you want revolution.

If we are to make a difference, we need to make this personal but how we engage is vital to our success as a community. We must not be drawn away from the Pack to find ourselves alone and fending for ourselves. We need to hold fast and embrace those qualities we hold within our own community as a seed of change for the world. We are heretics but now the heresy is for us to not let the tide of division sweep us up!

We need to make the work in this Vision Quest personal and real for ourselves. We need to address the spirit of division within us and bring reconciliation to that splintered spirit. Then taking that power, we can embrace the Spirit of those who have passed with hope for our collective future and send that spirit of Hope out into the world. As Within, So Without!

To draw the many elements of this work into a potent harmony, it is my intention to work with Goddess Brigid. She incorporates so many aspects of what we are dealing with and she can be a great healer!
