A Daily Routine for a Magical Life: Ask A Witch #4

Ask a Witch: A blog that answers back…

I get flooded with questions on a regular basis because of working at a metaphysical store. Ranging anywhere from “what is that?” to “I have an attachment, how do I get rid of it?” and my favorite, “do you have any dead animals for sale?” I thought I would take the time to answer some common questions on a larger platform rather than individually. I feel sometimes sharing knowledge helps those who don’t know to ask or they have so many questions, they don’t know where to begin. Each week, I am going to tackle a couple questions and allow people to get the answers they seek without feeling pressured. If you have any questions, you can send me an e-mail or shoot me a message on social media and I will answer your question in a blog anonymously.

This weeks question is from Donna P. asking:

What would you say is a good daily routine for a magical life?

Having a solid daily routine for someone who is magical is, I think, one of the most important things. You can learn all the spells and correspondences and rituals, but if you have no bond with your Gods and spirits then you’ll only ever get so far. Also, besides it being a great way to bolster your magic, it also helps build confidence. I’m going to give you a quick rundown of what I do on a daily basis so you can get an idea of daily routine:

So it starts actually in the evening before bed. My altar is in my bedroom and before I go to bed I sit at my altar and light the candles. I then call my gods in by name and just feel their energy with me in the room. I ask them to give me a recap of the day and what I’m headed towards for the night. I do a lot of work while I allow my body to sleep so connecting with my spirits is important. I then go to bed and get on with my evening spirit work. In the morning when I wake up it’s a little different. I have a wall hanging quote that is right within eye shot when I open my eyes. I read it then I look over at my altar and give it a hello for the day. I again check in and ask them about my day. Now, obviously the way in which you connect with spirits is going to vary so while I may have verbal or telepathic communication, you may have a different experience. I know a lot of people who use tarot cards or even a pendulum to get messages from their spirits on the altar. During the day because I work in a magic store, I am in constant communication with all manner of spirits so my work day is when I use them the most to help others.

Building your daily magical routine can be a bit challenging at times. When you are surrounded by spirits who you deem as exalted and full of knowledge, it can be intimidating because you feel that maybe you will ask the wrong question or do the wrong action. Also, it sometimes feels inadequate just having a shrine or altar set up with statues and crystals and the sort. I always advise folks to work slowly and simply. Your practice will grow over time and become much more satisfying. I recommend adding some small ritual to your daily practice to help you get your bearings and allow you to work with your altar and spirits more. Simply light a small white candle dressed with a tiny bit of your favorite essential oil and place it on your altar. You should also get a small bouquet of flowers or anything that you deem appropriate as some sort of an offering to your gods. Sit at your altar and just enjoy the company to say it simply. If you wish to get some messages from your spirits all you need to do is be open to the messages coming through. Again, you might use tarot cards or a pendulum to get messages from spirits. It’s a fantastic way to help you connect and allow for you to use the tools of your craft in your daily practice. Always remember that most of the time, the energy you feel with the spirits will be quite different from when you are working in a group setting. It can be subtle and much more intimate. It can build over time because well spirits will make themselves known and they usually aren’t very quiet.

In some traditions, there are certain daily rituals that are done and that’s something to consider as well. If you belong to a certain group or tradition, don’t be afraid to ask what is acceptable to do within that path. In some Wiccan traditions, they will suggest doing the lesser banishing ritual of the pentagram every morning to help center yourself. I don’t particularly follow a specific tradition within Wicca and I never connected very much with the LBRP which is the known acronym for that ritual. It is effective and many witches I know use it and it works for them well. Your daily practice doesn’t always need to be some sort of magical working, the Gods are like friends and partners so you can share in your mundane experiences with them. If you are having a meal or a drink, share some on your altar. Journalling is another very effective way to build your daily practice. Any expression of yourself is a way to connect with your gods. They are the things that make us happy and inspired, and the gods love seeing us in our element.
