Ask a Witch #2: a blog by Hovik

Ask a Witch: A blog that answers back…

I get flooded with questions on a regular basis because of working at a metaphysical store. Ranging anywhere from “what is that?” to “I have an attachment, how do I get rid of it?” and my favorite, “do you have any dead animals for sale?” I thought I would take the time to answer some common questions on a larger platform rather than individually. I feel sometimes sharing knowledge helps those who don’t know to ask or they have so many questions, they don’t know where to begin. Each week, I am going to tackle a couple questions and allow people to get the answers they seek without feeling pressured. If you have any questions, you can send me an e-mail or shoot me a message on social media and I will answer your question in a blog anonymously.

This week’s question is from Jodi F. asking:

“Is magic selective?”” Isn’t the intent and energy the same no matter what type of spell you are casting?” “Why would one type of spell work and another not when casting on someone?”

So is magic selective?

Well, technically magic is selective yes. This is because magic is like a car on the freeway, it’s going to take the easiest lane to the destination. Depending on the style of magic you are working, it can affect the outcome. In most Wiccan traditions, you are working within the natural forces of the universe so trying to go against it can be challenging. A person can toss in their magic to the wheel of fate and hope it lands favorably, but it can’t be guaranteed. Now, if you work outside the system of Wicca where you can choose to take on full responsibility for your actions and stand by your truth then it can be possible to move things more in your favor. You just must be aware that you will be carrying the responsibility of your actions. The intention and energy is the same no matter what because that comes from the practitioner. Your magical atmosphere dictates what happens to the energy or rather, the lanes available for you to access.

As far as why one type of spell may work over another when casting on someone again goes back to what system you work. In Wicca, we work with the three-fold law which basically comes down to an it harm none, do what ye will. Most people work that into a spell by saying I wish for this to be in the highest and most correct good for the person currently. The reason why some spells you cast work on people and others don’t is because since don’t have a wider view of a person’s situation, what you think you are helping to fix is merely putting a bandage on things. Everyone’s path is unique to them and it may be part of theirs to experience something and you trying to “fix things” is hindering their personal growth. You have to allow people to make their own choices. You can provide options, but they have to choose to take it. Once you step into forcing choices then you get into black magic where you are actively manipulating someone else’s free will. I personally work my magic on others by giving them a blessing of clarity to find their way. For the opportunity to move forward is more easily seen that way and the person can make a change. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t force it to drink.
