Herb-Drug Interactions Workshop

with Julie James

Herb-Drub Interactions

Herb-Drug interactions are an area of great concern nowadays.  With the increase in prescriptions for medications, and the increased interest in herbal products it is important to understand how the things we are putting in our body interact with each other.

There are really only a very few confirmed herb-drug interactions recorded, with the vast majority of the information available either extrapolation of data on single constituents, assumption of effects based on animal studies, and such.

There are concerns, of course, that need to be taken seriously. And herb users need to be aware of the potential for these interactions.  Exploring how these things interact with each other is a necessary thing in order to ensure that we remain healthy.

Of more interest to me is the fact that the majority of the confirmed herb-drug interactions actually show positive effects, not negative: in protection against or relief from side effects, potentiation of effects, and other such interactions.

In this class we will evaluate the available information, assess sources critically for correct information (what? Wikipedia isn’t an entirely reliable resource??), and build a foundation of solid information that we can build on.

And yeah, we’ll have stuff to play with, too, just because. Yummy stuff. Smelly stuff. Just because we can.

Class fee $23; discounted to $20 if paid in cash.
